Community seed bombs
The hypothesis
What if small, individual actions, initiated through challenge cards and supported by hands-on activities like creating pollinator seed balls, could collectively nurture nature and foster sustainable environmental behaviours? By providing accessible tools, clear instructions, and a welcoming environment, can we inspire meaningful engagement with nature and cultivate a stronger sense of responsibility for the environment?
Method / How
Testing Environment
We will be making seed balls in the street, people take a challenge card with instructions and have all materials needed to make it. The aim is to create a welcoming and accessible environment where people feel encouraged to participate and engage with the activity.
Participation Process
1. Instructions and materials: Participants will receive a challenge card with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to make a seed ball. Materials for the activity, such as soil, seeds, and coconut coir will be provided on-site.
2. Facilitator support: Facilitators will be available to guide participants, answer any questions, and provide encouragement throughout the process.
3. Completion: Once participants have completed their challenge, they are encouraged to place their seed bomb on instagram, take it home to plant and skill share by passing the card to someone else.
Why:
I want to see if positive interactions with natural environments can foster a deeper appreciation and sense of responsibility toward the natural world, which could lead to more eco-friendly actions and interest in taking part as a collective.
Conclusion
The Maker Change! Seed Ball Intervention demonstrated the potential of hands-on, small-scale actions to mobilise communities. The simplicity of creating pollinator seed balls proved highly engaging, particularly for families and children. Participants expressed enthusiasm, and many were already involved in local gardens and eco-initiatives, reinforcing the potential for linking grassroots efforts through the bio-tree. The project’s social media traction increased, showing a growing interest in collective action. However, the challenge of long-term engagement remains—how do I transform one-time participation into a sustained community movement?
