Carrer Mozart, a wildly creative street in the Gràcia, Barcelona, that comes alive each year during the Festa Major de Gràcia, a vibrant street festival that has been a feature of community celebration since the 19th century. The street, like many others in the neighbourhood, is transformed into a creative wonderland, showcasing the artistry and ingenuity of its residents and members of the commission.
I joined the moment I moved to Barcelona, walking past the street and seeing all the tables full of projects in action, I simply asked if I could help out, now it's year 4, they are particularly welcoming to all! Being part of the art and design of the street for this festival is a deeply rewarding experience, as it involves real genuine maker culture to problem-solve and work with upcycled materials. This tradition of using recycled objects not only reflects a commitment to sustainability but also honours the resourcefulness and creativity that have long defined the Gràcia community. Upcycling materials for the festival decorations brings neighbours together as they collaborate to turn discarded items into beautiful works of art, building a strong sense of pride and connection within the community.
